To hire a car, you must hold a valid, full driving licence. If your licence is not in English, you will need to provide an NZTA-approved translation or an International Driving Permit alongside your original licence. You must present a physical copy of these documents when picking up your rental car.
We also accept Digital Driver Licenses (DDLs). However, it is essential that you carry your original physical licence when picking up your rental car and while driving in New Zealand. The New Zealand Police may require the original licence to verify its validity.
For more information on Digital Driver Licences:
The primary driver needs a valid Visa or Mastercard credit card. According to our policy, the renter, driver, and credit card holder must be the same person, and the card must display the cardholder’s name. Depending on the insurance type you choose, a pre-authorised deposit of varying amounts will be charged to your credit card.

Vehicles are not permitted on the following roads: Ball Hutt Road (Mt Cook), Skippers Road (Queenstown), Deer Park (Queenstown), the Road to Paradise (Glenorchy), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), all roads north of Colville (Coromandel Peninsula), or any unpaved roads, including beaches. Insurance will not cover any damage or repair costs if an accident occurs in these areas.

In case of any mechanical issues, our vehicles are covered by 24-hour NZRA Roadside Assistance at no cost. This includes engine faults, electrical faults, cooling system issues, and vehicle recovery. However, if the issue is due to driver error (e.g., running out of petrol or leaving lights on), you will be responsible for the cost unless you have purchased optional Roadside Assistance Cover.
If you are involved in an accident, please contact the A Rentals team immediately. If the accident involves a third party, call the police (111) to obtain a police report and gather all relevant details from the parties involved. When returning the vehicle, allow at least 30 minutes for us to record any damages and complete the necessary paperwork. Depending on your insurance excess, we may hold a bond for the maximum amount of the excess. Any difference between the actual repair costs and the bond will be adjusted accordingly.
